Ebook About
Spanning a thousand years, and following the shifting fortunes of two families though the ages, this is the epic saga of Rome, the city and its people. Weaving history, legend, and new archaeological discoveries into a spellbinding narrative, critically acclaimed novelist Steven Saylor gives new life to the drama of the city's first thousand years — from the founding of the city by the ill-fated twins Romulus and Remus, through Rome's astonishing ascent to become the capitol of the most powerful empire in history. Roma recounts the tragedy of the hero-traitor Coriolanus, the capture of the city by the Gauls, the invasion of Hannibal, the bitter political struggles of the patricians and plebeians, and the ultimate death of Rome's republic with the triumph, and assassination, of Julius Caesar. Witnessing this history, and sometimes playing key roles, are the descendents of two of Rome's first families, the Potitius and Pinarius clans: One is the confidant of Romulus. One is born a slave and tempts a Vestal virgin to break her vows. One becomes a mass murderer. And one becomes the heir of Julius Caesar. Linking the generations is a mysterious talisman as ancient as the city itself. Epic in every sense of the word, Roma is a panoramic historical saga and Saylor's finest achievement to date.

Book Roma: The Novel of Ancient Rome Review :

How does one write about 500 years of history of a state that conquered almost the whole ancient world and keeps influencing us till to-day? How does one choose which of the 500 years to concentrate on? What events? Which personae? Moreover, how to make it readable to the lay person and not wander into the forbidding forests of historical facts and their scientific interpretations? Colleen McCullough had attempted this pretty impossible task by writing close to 6,000 pages over seventeen years in her 7-tome series Masters of Rome. And she failed, despite her talent as a fiction writer (The Thorn Bird!) and her historical expertise. Steven Sayler tries for more in less, and fails too. His book attempts to trace Roman history from the legendary times predating Remus and Romulus till the end of the reign of Augustus in under 600 pages. He invents a legendary talisman inherited from generation to generation by the members of several Roman families that were significantly involved in a chosen sample of major historical events. The method - A literary archeological dig where a snippet of the overall picture is revealed and sheds light on that particular historical period. Style - Except of some (mercifully short and mercifully rare) graphic sex and gore scenes, an early teens primer intended to draw the young adult into Rome and its history. The result - poor. The method makes the account fragmented and jumpy. The style makes it juvenile and boring. Did I learn anything new about Rome? Some, but most of it not very significant (e.g. where the word "fascination" comes from). Why three stars and not two? Because I did manage to finish the book, skipping here and there large swaths of text.
If it weren't for the periodic allusions to sex, I would swear this book had been written for 10 year olds. On top of that, the editing/proof-reading is terrible. I got through 40% of the book, but couldn't stomach any more. I gave it 2 stars, instead of just 1, because it's historically acceptable. On the other hand, story and character development are atrocious.
